Meet Madame Felis: A Mountain-Moving Mama
Meet Madame Felis: A Mountain-Moving Mama
Dear friends,
While many will celebrate Mother’s Day with cards or gifts, we invite you to honor a different kind of mother—a mama in the mountains of Ayiti, where life is full of hardship but also full of hope.
We first met Madame Felis shortly after she gave birth, alone and unsupported in her tiny rented room. Her space—a 12x12 cinder block room—was shared with her newborn and two other children. Her bed was a bare frame covered with woven scraps. A mouse scurried through a pile of clothing. There was no food. Her ten-year-old daughter had gone to fetch water from a distant spring. Her husband had abandoned her, and she was utterly alone.
In her village, she was labeled “tèt pa la”—a term often used for those with cognitive challenges. Years of malnutrition, lack of education, trauma, and the weight of survival had taken their toll.
We welcomed her into our sewing program. When sewing didn’t click, we tried tie-dye—and something began to blossom. Today, she works part-time at Kay Espwa. She is providing for her children in her own quiet, resilient way.
Madame Felis is no longer invisible. She is no longer alone.
She is a mountain-moving mama, rising step by step.
This Mother’s Day, will you help us stand with mamas like Madame Felis?
A gift of $50/month helps us walk with women like her through job creation, education, and basic needs. If $50 isn’t possible, even $25/month helps Espwa Means Hope support a mama in our village.
It doesn’t cover all her expenses—but it helps make sure she doesn’t face the mountains alone.
Let’s rise up with the Strong Mamas of the Mountains—together.
With love,
Anje + The Espwa Means Hope Team
